Some of the things you will discuss at your consultation appointment at our Fort Lauderdale office are your goals and expectations for this surgery and what male breast reduction can and can’t do. Depending on the reason behind your male breast enlargement, Dr. Kaplan may need you to have blood work performed at a local Fort Lauderdale lab. A consultation with a Fort Lauderdale endocrinologist may also be necessary. Dr. Kaplan will also review your current list of medications and make any needed changes prior to your male breast reduction.
If you and Dr. Kaplan believe that male breast reduction is the best choice for treating your male breast enlargement, you will be scheduled for surgery at either our Fort Lauderdale surgical suite right here in our Fort Lauderdale office or at one of Fort Lauderdale’s excellent hospitals.
Male breast reduction is a major surgery and will require preparation and excellent self-care before and after your procedure. Fort Lauderdale surgeon Dr. Kaplan will provide you with specific pre- and post-surgery after-care instructions and review them with you thoroughly to make sure you understand them prior to your male breast reduction. Of course, if you find that you have any questions later, you are welcome to call our Fort Lauderdale office, and we will be happy to assist you.
Plan to take time off work and regular activity to recover from your male breast reduction. If you have children, make arrangements for them to be watched for a few days following your male breast reduction so you can focus on resting and healing.
Your male breast reduction may require liposuction, or it may be done entirely through removal of excess tissue surgically through incisions. This will primarily depend on the composition of your breasts; fatty tissue can be removed through liposuction while glandular breast tissue does require surgical removal.
The location of your male breast reduction incisions will depend on the current size and shape of your breasts. Fort Lauderdale surgeon Dr. Kaplan will be careful to place your incisions so that they blend in well with your natural contours and lines once healed. He may need to remove and reposition your nipples if their current placement is not in line with the norm or if they are protruding because of your particular type of male breast enlargement.
Once the necessary corrections have been made, your incisions will be closed using sutures. Fort Lauderdale surgeon Dr. Kaplan may choose to use sutures that absorb into your tissue, sutures that must be removed or a combination.
After you are discharged from our Fort Lauderdale surgical suite or the Fort Lauderdale hospital where your male breast reduction was performed, you will need to go home and relax. A friend or relative must drive you to and from your male breast reduction as you will still be feeling the effects of the anesthesia.
After your male breast reduction, you will probably feel some discomfort and experience swelling and bruising. Follow Dr. Kaplan’s directions for self-care, and take your medications as prescribed to keep swelling and pain to a minimum.
You will be scheduled for several follow-up visits at our Fort Lauderdale office so Dr. Kaplan can check your progress following your male breast reduction. Keep these appointments. They are very important as Dr. Kaplan will be making sure that you are healing well and avoiding complications. Follow Dr. Kaplan’s instructions for returning to normal activity levels following your male breast reduction.
